Top 5 Video Games of 2023

2023 has been an incredible year for gaming, and it's time to celebrate the titles that have defined these twelve months. From intergalactic adventures to nostalgic revivals, here are my top picks for the year:

5. Sonic Superstars
Sonic Superstars revitalises the classic Sonic experience with a blend of nostalgia and innovation. The game features fan-favorite characters which each bring unique abilities to dynamic 2D platforming. A standout addition is the game's multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to join in both locally and online. The title introduces entirely new zones and challenges, alongside the novel use of individual Chaos Emeralds, each granting unique abilities. These features, combined with the classic 2D gameplay, make Sonic Superstars a modern tribute to the series, appealing to both long-standing fans and newcomers.

4. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

Double Dragon Gaiden offers an innovative blend of the series classic beat 'em up action with modern roguelite elements, creating a unique and engaging gaming experience. In addition to the return of Billy and Jimmy, a whole host of playable characters are available, each with their own fighting style. This variety and the dynamic mission structure ensure that each playthrough provides a new and exciting challenge.

3. Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 is a vibrant reimagining of the classic fighting game series. The game's storyline is set in a new era, protected by Liu Kang, featuring familiar characters in redefined roles. Notable characters include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, and Kitana. The game boasts intriguing twist and offers an exciting mix of traditional and new elements. The game introduces the Kameo Fighters system, where players can call on additional characters for assistance in matches. These Kameos have their unique animations, brutalities, and fatalities.

2. Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder marks a significant return to the 2D side-scrolling format for the Mario series. Set in the Flower Kingdom, players join Mario and his friends to stop Bowser using Wonder Flowers, which add a creative twist to the game's dynamics. This game has a huge cast of playable characters including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, and Yoshi.
The game is celebrated for its great graphics, innovative gameplay, and the introduction of new power-ups like Elephant Mario and the Drill Suit. It offers both single-player and multiplayer options, making it a versatile choice for all types of gamers.

1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

My choice for game of the year puts us back in the shoes of Jedi Cal Kestis. Set five years after Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor continues the story of Cal, BD1 and company as they reunite to deal with the threat of the Galactic Empire. Gameplay advancements are notable, with new lightsaber styles and customisation options, alongside the ability to wield a blaster. The story's depth and the new gameplay mechanics, which include additional Force abilities, make it a must-play.

As for honourable mentions, Robocop, Spiderman 2, Street Fighter 6, Starfield and Hi-Fi Rush are some key releases that also deserve recognition, from the futuristic streets of Detroit to competitive duels in the virtual arcade.

As we bid farewell to 2023, the anticipation for 2024 grows. The gaming universe is constantly expanding, with new technologies, narratives, and experiences on the horizon. Let's embrace this moment to appreciate the creativity and hard work of the developers and artists who brought these games to life.

We can’t wait for another year of groundbreaking adventures, immersive storytelling, and innovation in the world of gaming. 2024, we're ready!
